Edmund Ho Hau-wah, Vice-Chairman of the World Trade Center Macau, was elected Macau's first post-handover Chinese Chief Executive by a 199-member Selection Committee on May 15.

Mr Ho, who received 82 per cent of the votes cast, will replace Governor Gen. Vasco Rocha Vieira at the helm of the local administration at midnight on December 19. He was appointed as chief executive-designate by Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji at a special ceremony in Beijing on May 24.

Mr Ho, a son of Macau's late legendary community leader Ho Yin, has been widely described as an experienced community leader with an excellent track record in consensus politics. He launched his business and political career in Macau after his father's demise in December 1983, when he took over his family's Tai Fung Bank and joined the Governor's Consultative Council, after which he became Vice-President of the Macau Legislative Assembly and a member of the powerful standing committee of the National People's Congress in Beijing.

Governor Gen. Vieira sent a congratulatory message to Mr Ho immediately after the election result had been announced, emphasising that he and his whole government "are at your entire disposal to co-operate with you in preparing for the full exercise of your duties as future chief executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region". The Governor praised Mr Ho for his "high abilities" and professional and personal qualities, adding that the election victory "reflects public recognition of your efforts in protecting Macau's interests".

Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio and Foreign Minister Jaime Gama also congratulated Mr Ho on his election as Macau's post-handover political leader.

Mr Ho is a founding member of the WTC Macau, who has been its vice-chairman since it was launched in 1986. He has ever since taken a keen interest in the WTC Macau's activities that have established it as the territory's prime venue for international business contacts, exchanges and meetings.
